Discovering wine without overcomplicating things: a tasting for everyone

Has someone ever started talking about the wine you are tasting, leaving you feeling that you do not know enough?

In a recent interview, our winemaker and nationally recognised authority in the world of wine, Antonio T. Palacios, spoke about this very subject. His conclusion: wine tasting is not an art reserved for a select few. The secret is to relax, enjoy yourself and let your memories guide you.

Here are a few tips to help you overcome your fear of wine tasting.

It all begins with sight

Before tasting it, take a moment to observe it. Tilt the glass against a white background and look at the colour, the brightness, the rim that may have stories to tell. More orange? It may have more years behind it. Vivid tones? It is likely young and full of energy. There are no right or wrong answers: what matters is what it conveys to you.

One aroma, a thousand memories

The best thing about wine is that it smells of life, of places, people and moments... Perhaps it reminds you of the fruit you ate in summer, the incense of an old house, or the countryside after rain. Scents awaken our memories without asking permission, making the experience deeply personal. You do not need to be an expert. Just let yourself be carried away.

Taste is not explained; it is felt

On the palate, wine is something you feel. Beyond technical terms, what matters is whether you like it or not. As you taste the wine, notice how it behaves: is it smooth? Does it linger? Does it invite another sip? Perhaps it seems fresh, warm, creamy… and that is perfectly valid. What matters is not repeating what others say, but recognising what you like. And the finish—that lingering burst of pleasure—is the great reward our sensory memory gives us.

Out with the myths

Forget the fear, the impossible terminology and the pressure of “expensive wine”. The best wine is not the most complex, the most famous or the most expensive… it is the one you like.

Tasting wine is not a test; it is a sensory journey. The only requirement is wanting to enjoy it. So the next time you have a glass in your hand… smell, feel, remember. Above all: let go of your fear.

Wine tasting Crusoe Treasure

Now that you have overcome your fear of tasting a new wine, would you like to listen to the waves of the sea—or to the silence beneath the ocean—while tasting one of our underwater wines?

Shall we begin the tasting?
