How to Swirl Wine in a Glass for a Perfect Tasting

Swirling wine in the glass is not simply an elegant gesture: it is an essential technique for fully appreciating its aroma, flavour and complexity. At Crusoe Treasure, where we mature our wines on the seabed, every detail matters in creating a unique experience. Learning to swirl wine correctly is a key step in appreciating its richness.

Why is it important to swirl wine in the glass?

Swirling wine in the glass helps to oxygenate it—that is, to bring it into contact with the air. This allows aromatic compounds that remain closed while the wine is still to be released. Particularly in aged wines such as those matured beneath the sea, this step reveals surprising layers of aroma.

Steps for swirling wine correctly

  1. Choose the right glass: a tulip-shaped or Bordeaux glass makes circular movement easier and concentrates the aromas at the top.
  2. Fill the glass one-third full: this leaves room to swirl the wine without spilling it and allows the aromas to expand.
  3. Hold the glass by the stem: this prevents your hand from warming the wine and gives you better control over the movement.
  4. Swirl gently in circles: rest the base on the table and move the glass in small circles, or do it in the air if you have more experience.
  5. Observe and smell: notice the tears (or legs) of the wine as they run down the glass, then inhale deeply to capture its most volatile notes.

Tips for a better experience

  • Use natural light or a white surface to observe the colour.

  • Avoid perfumes or strong odours in the surroundings.

  • In wines such as those from Crusoe Treasure, whose underwater ageing enhances marine and mineral nuances, this gesture reveals their true personality.
