The interview with Borja Saracho, founder of Bodega Crusoe Treasure alongside Joxean Saez de Ocariz, has received extensive media coverage nationally and internationally. News outlets in China, Belgium and the United States, among others, have reported on our winery’s production process—the world’s first underwater winery and artificial reef. The Associated Press interview conducted by Cassandra Allwood has generated enormous interest, confirming the strong attention from the media.

International coverage

Euronews, one of Europe’s leading media outlets, has provided extensive coverage, featuring the interview on its news programmes and in an online article. Elsewhere on the continent, Het Laatste news (HLN)  , the most widely read newspaper in Flanders and Belgium, and Deutsche Welle (DW), a major German public broadcaster, have also covered the story, all highlighting the brand’s distinctive character and the quality of the wines discussed by an American wine tourist.

“You may think we’re crazy, and that all of this is marketing, but after hundreds or thousands of analyses, we have seen that the different evolution of the chemical components has a positive effect on the wine’s expression.”

International channels such as CBS produced a feature on the interview that also included testimonials from wine tourists visiting our winery while enjoying one of our experiences. In addition, local media such as Central Oregon News  and the magazine Inside Edition also followed the story.

“The taste is absolutely unique. It isn’t sweet, but at the same time, it isn’t bitter. It’s difficult to explain. You really have to try it to know.”

Coverage of our underwater treasures also appeared around the world, including reports by WION, , an Indian multinational English-language news network, in China and Taiwan viaYahoo! News, in Japan on TV Asahi, and on Cuba Comunica.

Plentzia, Bizkaia and Euskadi

This national and international media attention acts as a catalyst for tourism in Plentzia, Bizkaia and Euskadi as a whole, supporting thes priorities set out in the Basque Government’s tourism development plan, together with Basquetour, with a focus on sustainability.

Visitors to Bodega Crusoe Treasure are generally passionate about wine and innovation, and respectful of the environment—a profile that aligns with Euskadi’s tourism strategy.

In 2022, during the final months alone, we welcomed around 200 visitors from countries including the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. They were all pleasantly surprised by the transformation brought about by the underwater ageing of our wines, the underwater winery–artificial reef, and the incomparable setting in which we are located: the Uribe kosta region, Plentzia-Barrika-Gorliz, in Bizkaia. A unique setting that brings together innovation, culture and gastronomy.
