If you are not yet familiar with our winery’s story, you are about to fall in love with it. At Bodega Crusoe Treasure, a pioneer in the art of making underwater wine, there is a very special connection with literature. Because beyond the name that defines us (inspired by the legendary castaway Robinson Crusoe), our story is filled with adventures, people, experiences and novels.
The Origin of the Name: A Spirit of Adventure and Discovery
When we dreamed of creating a winery beneath the sea, where wines could mature in unique conditions, we initially thought of calling it “TREASURE”, evoking the romantic idea of treasures hidden on the ocean floor. But we soon realised that we needed a longer, stronger name—one that could be registered in different countries and reflect the essence of our proposition: exploration, mystery and discovery. Thus was born the name Crusoe Treasure, a perfect union of the search for treasure and the adventurous spirit of the celebrated Robinson Crusoe.
The dream began in 2007, and ever since, day after day, we have continued to explore the boundaries between the sea, wine and the thrill of the unknown.
Robinson Crusoe: The Novel That Inspired Our Name
Few literary works have had as much impact as Robinson Crusoe. Written by Daniel Defoe and published in 1719, it recounts the adventures of an English sailor who is shipwrecked on a deserted island and survives on his own for almost three decades. Defoe is believed to have drawn inspiration from the true stories of castaways Alexander Selkirk and Pedro Serrano. His work is a universal classic that celebrates ingenuity, resilience and the human capacity to adapt in the face of the unknown.
Today, Robinson Crusoe’s name belongs to an island and also to our winery: Crusoe Treasure, a project that, like the novel’s protagonist, was born from a desire to explore uncharted territories. Just as Robinson Crusoe found his home among the waves, we complete the process of making our wines beneath the sea, allowing the ocean to write the final page of every bottle.
‘Only Silence Remains’: When Fiction Meets Wine
Our relationship with literature took another step when Crusoe Treasure appeared in the novel ‘Only Silence Remains’, written by Txemi Parra and published by Grijalbo. This mystery thriller unfolds between Huesca, Getxo and Plentzia, with our winery and wines playing a prominent role in the plot.

After its publication, we were fortunate enough to meet Txemi Parra, attend the presentation of his book and welcome him to our underwater winery. Together, we shared a wine tasting, a boat trip—as featured in his story—and an inspiring conversation about creativity, adventure and the sea. In addition to being a novelist, Parra is the screenwriter of well-known series such as “El Internado”, “Aída” and “Águila Roja”, and his novel is another example of how our underwater winery, located in the Cantabrian Sea, possesses the mysterious, intriguing aura of the finest novels.

Literature Continues Its Journey
And Parra is not the only author to have immersed himself in our world. Other writers, such as acclaimed author Ibón Martín in his novel “The Hour of the Seagulls”, have also included Crusoe Treasure in their plots, taking us once again to that territory where wine, sea and imagination intertwine.
Bruma Negra: Supporting Crime Fiction in Plentzia
Our connection with literature extends beyond the pages. For years, we have taken part in the crime-fiction festival “Bruma Negra”, created by the tireless Juan Mari Barasorda and held annually in Plentzia, around 20 km from Bilbao, facing the waters where our wines rest.

A Story Still Being Written
Every bottle of Crusoe Treasure holds its own tale, its own story, while also forming part of a greater one: that of a winery born from a dream, inspired by adventure, literature and the ocean, where wonderful things happen every day between wines and people. Because for us, wine is not only drunk; it is also shared, read and enjoyed.
