Our story began back in 2007, when, while working in the Cantabrian Sea, we wanted to create an artificial reef... an infrastructure that would help the sea regenerate. To undertake a project like this, we needed to generate income and find a business model to make that artificial reef a reality. As it turned out, the business model was to make a beverage... inside it.
The first step was to study the possible evolution of wine and other beverages under the sea. For this purpose, we created the Underwater Beverage Ageing Laboratory and submerged wines, cider and beers from many national Designations of Origin. The aim was to see whether any of them could change under the sea and, in time, become a treasure. The result was especially favourable for wine; its evolution surprised everyone. And so we began, expanding the underwater infrastructure, creating a much larger reef and submerging wine bottles inside it. Thus the winery Crusoe Treasure was born, under the oenological direction of the prestigious Dr in oenology Antonio Palacios who encouraged us to do so by sharing his knowledge to craft wines that were especially different.
As international pioneers in underwater oenology, in 2019 we organised the world's First Underwater Oenology Congress, Underwaterwine Congress 2019, which attracted attention across the industry, including from the prestigious magazine DECANTER.
Today we produce white, red and sparkling wines. Starting with the vineyard (nine hectares of vines spread throughout Spain), we follow an exceptionally meticulous process, with close attention to detail, so that our limited wine productions are genuine treasures from the outset, which the wild Cantabrian Sea will ultimately shape inside an artificial reef—a pioneering underwater winery.
Our wines and winery have received numerous awards and, despite our limited production, our bottles can be found in countries including Japan, Germany, the UK, Singapore and France...
The world's leading luxury tour operators have trusted us consistently for years, visiting us with their clients—wine lovers who travel the world to discover unique wineries and leave pleasantly surprised.
The media attention our brand has received over the years has been noteworthy, and thanks to its constant innovation, it continues to appear in media outlets around the world.
Located in Plentzia, a coastal town near Bilbao in the province of Bizkaia, our underwater infrastructure (artificial reef and underwater winery) lies on the seabed of this beautiful bay.
We have a space at Plentzia's own port where, by reservation, we offer tailored experiences for wine and gastronomy lovers.
