If you’re looking for a winery to visit near Bilbao, we have one piece of good news and one even better. The good news: you don’t need a car, an organised tour or half a day to spare. The even better news: the winery closest at hand is unlike any other on the planet.
We are Crusoe Treasure, and our wines do not simply age in an above-ground barrel room before maturing 18 metres below the surface, on the seabed of the Cantábrico, inside an artificial reef we have been caring for since 2008 off the coast of Getxo and Plentzia. We are the world’s first artificial-reef underwater winery and the only winery open to visitors in Getxo, right in the Marina, 25 minutes from central Bilbao by metro (L1, Algorta station) and 300 metres from the cruise terminal.
That means you can have breakfast beside the Guggenheim and, without getting in a car, be holding a glass of underwater wine by mid-morning, looking out to sea. No other winery around Bilbao can offer you that.
What you can do at Crusoe Treasure
The visit: the story of a wine that matures beneath the sea
Every visitor asks us the same question—and it is the right one: what happens to a wine after months on the seabed of the Cantábrico? The visit answers it. You will explore our permanent exhibition—either with a guide or at your own pace—and discover how the idea came about, what the structures we submerge are like, what the sea can do that no ageing room can (pressure, total darkness, constant movement and a stable temperature without using a single watt), and why our reef is now teeming with marine life. Including our most famous neighbour: an octopus that inspired the giant mural on the façade.

And in the 360° immersive room, you will descend to the seabed without getting wet: the closest experience to diving among bottles available without putting on a wetsuit.
The tasting: the same wine, above and below
Our signature tasting compares wines aged beneath the sea with their land-aged twins. The same wine, two different lives. This is the moment when sceptics stop being sceptics. We offer guided tastings, food-and-wine pairings and private sessions for groups, always by prior reservation.
The wine bar: a glass by the sea
No reservation, no rush. Our wine bar at Getxo Marina serves our wines by the glass with the sea right in front of you. It is the perfect short stop: a glass after a stroll around the harbour, before lunch in Getxo or when you step off the cruise ship.
The shop: wines you will find nowhere else
At our shop and showroom, you can buy the full Crusoe Treasure range, including bottles recovered from the seabed, bearing the marks marine life leaves on the glass. No two are alike. If you are looking for a gift for someone who is impossible to surprise, this one usually does the trick.
Show cooking, lunches and dinners: a table beside the reef
We offer live show cooking, lunches and dinners paired with our underwater wines, as well as our own catering service. From a business lunch to a gala dinner overlooking the harbour, the cuisine adapts to the group and the wine tells the story.

Presentations, corporate meetings and private events

Our space hosts private events for up to 150 people: product presentations, corporate days, team building with a tasting (few team activities can rival tasting a wine that has spent a year beneath the sea), cocktails, family celebrations and cultural events. If you are looking for an event venue in Bilbao or Bizkaia that your guests have not already seen three times, your search ends here.
Getting here (spoiler: without a car)
We are at Muelle de Arriluce, in Getxo Marina:
- By metro from Bilbao: L1 to Algorta, followed by a 10-minute downhill walk to the harbour.
- By car: 20 minutes from central Bilbao, with parking around the harbour.
- From a cruise ship: the Getxo cruise terminal is 300 metres from our door.
Quite simply, we are the easiest winery to visit if you are in Bilbao. The txakoli wineries of Bizkaia make for a wonderful excursion—and we encourage you to take it—but they require a car and some planning. We are just one metro ticket away.
Frequently asked questions
Can you visit a winery in Bilbao without a car? Yes. Crusoe Treasure, in Getxo Marina, is the only winery in the Bilbao area accessible by metro: line 1 to Algorta, followed by a 10-minute walk.
What is an underwater wine? A wine aged on the seabed. In our case, 18 metres below the surface in the Cantábrico, inside an artificial reef, where pressure, darkness, stable temperature and the movement of the water refine the wine in a way that cannot be replicated on land.
Do I need to book? For tastings, guided visits, meals, show cooking and events, yes. The wine bar and shop do not require a reservation, but please check the opening hours.
How long does the visit last? The visit with tasting lasts approximately 90 minutes. You can spend as long as you like exploring the exhibition independently.
Do you organise corporate events? Yes: presentations, meetings, team building with a tasting, show cooking and celebrations for groups of up to 150 people, with our own catering service.
Is it suitable if I do not know much about wine? It is the ideal plan if you do not know much about wine. The story speaks for itself, and the comparative tasting (sea vs. land) can be enjoyed without technical jargon. And if you do know your wine, you will leave with new questions.
Can you see the actual underwater winery? The cages are on the seabed, but the 360° immersive room takes you to them virtually. During the season, we also organise experiences at sea; contact us to check availability.
